On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will issue new guidance on school openings. The announcement came hours after President Trump criticized earlier recommendations as “very impractical.” While left-leaning articles highlight that Trump undercut recommendations of administration health experts, right-leaning articles highlight that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said students will learn on a “blended schedule” this fall.

The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that Trump undercut the recommendations of administration health experts, tweeting, “I disagree with @CDCgov on their very tough and expensive guidelines for opening schools.” While Trump threatened federal intervention, Vice President Mike Pence stressed the importance of local decision making, stating that in coronavirus hot spots, officials could decide to curtail school openings.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting that House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott blasted Trump’s push for schools to fully reopen in the fall. However, Pence said in a briefing that the CDC guidance shouldn’t become a “barrier” for allowing students to resume instruction in classrooms.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Mayor Bill de Blasio said public schools won’t fully reopen this fall amid the pandemic and students will learn on a “blended schedule.” Classrooms will hold between nine and 12 students for in-person learning, and students will only physically be in the classroom select times of the week.
