Members of the House and Senate are working to draft a new coronavirus relief bill. While left-leaning articles highlight that Speaker Nancy Pelosi hoped to release the coronavirus relief package on Friday, right-leaning articles highlight caution from Republicans in releasing a new relief package.
A left-leaning article by Politico highlights that Pelosi hoped to release a multitrillion-dollar coronavirus relief package on Friday. While some Democrats worry the bill could cost upward of $2 trillion, Pelosi dismissed concerns about its cost as she said no one asked that question with the Republican’s 2017 tax-reduction package.
The Hill published a centrist article reporting that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif,) and Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) urged House leadership to include a provision in the next coronavirus relief package that would create an independent bipartisan commission to review the federal government’s handling of the pandemic. Schiff and Thompson have both introduced their own bills in recent weeks. Schiff’s bill limits the commission to 10 members, while Thompson envisions the commission having 25 members.
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republicans say Congress should wait to see the impact of the first coronavirus relief package before releasing a second one. The article also notes that even some Democrats have complained they don’t know what will be in the final draft of the bill.
